About Paul Chiang

Born in 1942 in Taichung, Taiwan, Paul Chiang is widely recognized as one of Taiwan's most celebrated abstractionists. His career spans nearly six decades, including representing Taiwan at the São Paulo Art Biennial in 1965 and spending almost three decades working in Paris and New York. After returning to Taiwan in the late 1990s, Chiang settled on the east coast in Taitung County, where he now resides.

In his early works, Chiang favored simple abstract lines and tonal nuances of monochromatic shades, as well as emphasizing layering and texture with pigments. These pieces reflected the artist's dedication to abstract art and the rigorous demands of artistic life abroad. In 1982, Chiang revisited Paris and started to work on the Notre Dame de Paris series, which marked a watershed moment of his artistic calling. During his time in New York, though a prominent agent suggested Chiang "redirect" his artistic style, he remained steadfast in his pursuit of self-discovery and refused to sell his works.

It wasn't until his return to Taiwan in 1998 that Chiang's most notable collection, Hundred Year Temple, opened the door for Chiang's rise to prominence; the meditative colors of the works reflected Chiang's re-appreciation and reconnection with his native culture.

Settling on Taiwan's east coast in 2008 also brought a shift in painting style. He drew inspiration from the vibrant hues of the seashore and countryside and incorporated them into series such as Pisilian, On Wings of Song, and Jinzun. Additionally, he began exploring new artistic possibilities by transitioning from two-dimensional paintings to sculpture.

At 82, Chiang continues to build a world of art inspired by nature, classical music, and the pursuit of spirit, which will all come to one in the "Paul Chiang Art Center" in 2024, the most prominent artist cultural park in Taiwan that integrates art, architecture, and nature; aiming to bring Taitung to the world, and the world to Taitung.

About Paul Chiang Art Center

In the early 1980s, while living in New York, Chiang envisioned opening his studio in East Hampton every summer to share with the public how nature inspired his art, as a way of giving back to society. This dream materialized four decades later with the establishment of the Paul Chiang Art Center in Jinzun, Taitung, Taiwan, representing the pinnacle of his career. The art center is a fusion of art, architecture, and nature, blending Taitung's rich cultural heritage with its natural beauty. Visitors can immerse themselves in the center's vibrant energy and life-enhancing experiences, and also explore Taitung's local cultural landmarks.
